The Mayor-Elect states his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, did not confirm this decision promptly after his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on the security of my family and the need to directing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability voters elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, it will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he is from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
