The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing His 20 Days Behind Bars

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a book in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, which recounts the period served behind bars.

The announcement was made just 11 days after the ex-leader was released while his appeal proceeds the court ruling related to illegal collaboration in a case to secure presidential race money provided by the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“Inside jail there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he notes in an extract, indicating the account will focus on his reflections during seclusion rather than a broader observation on the overcrowded and struggling French prison system.

“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where there is a lot to hear,” he adds. “The noise is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Recounting the Hardship

While appealing for release, the former leader had appeared by video link from his cell, depicting prison life as exhausting. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It has an impact every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

The former president, who served as France’s president for a five-year term, became the inaugural former head in the European Union and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Cell Library

It remains unclear whether he had time to review and analyze the texts he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail later flees to exact retribution.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy was placed in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space of about nine sq metres featuring a personal bathroom in the Paris jail located in the capital. Guards were stationed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned that he consumed just yogurt while inside due to concerns meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available to cook for himself yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client every day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings security would be better outside jail than inside. “He received threats against his life, listened to yells after dark and emergency responses next door as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

He entered custody on 21 October after the judiciary gave him a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges related to a plan to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, with a new trial planned for the coming spring.
