Meteorologists have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Proceed Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be essential," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are due to be chilly, so warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Health Warnings Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this indicated the weather was expected to trigger notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The guidance for all is clear: to welcome the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is absolutely essential.
