The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
