In a significant escalation, Kyiv's forces reportedly used British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military authorities.
Details of the Strike and Military Significance
The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, was reportedly hit, with "numerous explosions" observed at the location. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles against targets inside Russian soil.
Ukrainian officials noted that the Novoshakhtinsk facility serves as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in southern Russia and is directly involved in supplying the military of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held productive discussions with representatives of former US President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to end the war.
“It was a very productive conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a social media platform. “We explored some fresh concepts on how to move toward real peace closer, and it concerns approaches, meetings, and, of course, the schedule.”
Judicial Proceedings Within Russia
In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has convicted a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.
This case reportedly stem from an online post Udaltsov published backing another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the charges as fabricated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in protest.
Foreign Prisoner Case
Russian authorities has stated it is in contact with French authorities regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and allegedly facing additional accusations of espionage.
A spokesperson said that Russia has presented a proposal to France regarding Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all government services working to provide consular support and push for his release at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Occupied City
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was destroyed in a devastating bombardment while many civilians were sheltering in its cellar, is set to open its doors again. Authorities in control have promoted the reconstruction as a sign of renewal.
However, former actors from the theatre have called the reopening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a broader Kremlin effort to showcase its rule in seized territories, a process accompanied by the arrest or exile of critics and property seizures from Ukrainian citizens.
It is expected to open by the end of the month with a show of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt largely anew over the past two years.
