Food Benefits Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Amid Continuing Federal Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities announced on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national welfare initiatives will not be distributed in November because of the continuing government funding lapse.

Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day

The federal closure was in its 25th day when the announcement was made, which followed demands from hundreds of Democratic representatives urging the USDA to tap into reserve accounts to fund November's food assistance.

“Ultimately, resources are exhausted,” officials announced. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans rely on the regular assistance, according to federal data. Some regions, like one southwestern state, dependence on SNAP affects a significant portion of citizens.

Documents reviewed by Reuters revealed that the department would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Partisan Impasse

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree over how to support and resume the federal government.

Remarks from the leader of a prominent policy organization suggested that the White House had opportunities to take earlier action to prevent benefits from running out.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps earlier to be prepared to access these resources,” the comments added. “Rather, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to support legislation that would reopen federal functions.

States Prepare

State leaders from two affected states issued emergency declarations this week to allocate funds to combat potential hunger in anticipation of food benefits expiring in November.
