California's Governor States He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028
The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he plans to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections conclude.
"Yes, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom remarked when asked about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
Newsom's time in office as governor ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he emphasized that any choice is still years away.
"The future will decide," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Trump Critic
He has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase the party's congressional seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from critics.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary revealed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested eliminating the power to grant commercial driver's licenses.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," Duffy declared, in the wake of a this week's deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that led to fatalities and four injuries.
The governor's team highlighted that the federal government had approved the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously announced he was holding back $40m from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a recent comment countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Political Future
A recently conducted survey revealed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the American people."
